Prof. Dr. Bernward Märländer (married, 3 daughters) has been director of the Institute of Sugar Beet Research since 1991. Moreover, he is a Professor of Agronomy at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Georg-August-University of Goettingen.

After finishing his studies (1972 - 1976) and earning his doctorate (1979) in Agronomy and Crop Science at the University of Goettingen, he was employed at the breeding company A. Dieckmann-Heimburg. There he was responsible for breeding, seed production and agronomical field trials with sugar beet and hybrid rye.

In 1991 he finished his postdoctoral thesis which was entitled "Sugar Beet - Improvement of Sugar Beet Production by Optimizing Cropping System, Variety Selection and Breeding Progress" (Zuckerrüben - Produktionssteigerung bei Zuckerrüben als Ergebnis der Optimierung von Anbauverfahren und Sortenwahl sowie durch Züchtungsfortschritt).

He is managing (deputy) chairman of the sugar beet board of the German Agricultural Society (DLG) and member of other national and international committees, e.g. the curatorship of the Energy Research Centre of Lower Saxony (efns), the scientific advisory committee of the Julius-Kühn Insitut (JKI), the scientific advisory committee of the "Journal fuer Kulturplanzen" and the editorial board of the "European Journal of Agronomy".
