Abstract

Resistance against pesticides in pathogens, pests and weeds has to be considered as a major threat to efficient agricul-tural production in general. This review compiles the basics of pesticide resistance development including important mechanisms, the factors and components of risk assess-ment and provides an overview of the most relevant sugar beet pathogens, pests and weeds as well as compounds currently used for their control that are threatened by resis-tance development. Only detailed knowledge about the pesticide mode of action, agronomic factors for its use, genetics/biology of target organisms and the resistance mechanism will enable to identify risks preferably before pesticide failure. The information assembled shall help to develop resistance management plans including tactics for specific prevention and management of resistance to main-tain yield stability and allow sustainable intensification of sugar beet cultivation.
