Abstract

Sugarbeet production practices in Germany are reviewed. Regular surveys of production practices permit the early identification of trends as well as of regional practices. Seasonal variation is marked particularly with regard to the effect of weeds, diseases and pests. Cost-saving and environmentally-friendly agronomic practices are increasingly employed, especially in soil preparation, seed protection and fertilizer application. A greater differentiation is being observed in soil preparation. Straw mulching methods have become important. With improved seed protection, insecticide soil treatments are no longer necessary and spraying against aphids has also sharply reduced. More farmers are reducing nitrogen fertilizer use. There is an continuing trend towards higher performance and inter-farm cooperation in sowing, harvesting and transport. In-field cleaner-loaders are now almost universally deployed. Targeted and threshold-based fertilizer application and plant protection practices, guided by analysis and monitoring systems for soils, plants and environment are increasingly important.
