Abstract

Determination and evaluation of soil tare as variety trait was studied in field trials with different sugar beet genotypes. Soil tare percentage is defined as the difference between gross and net weights of roots relative to the net root weight. Besides root shape, soil and weather conditions have a major influence on soil tare. The sugar beets in german variety trials are usually processed at different locations (preparation systems). Therefore different genotypes and cleaning systems for loose soil were studied at 4 sites in 2001 and 2002 each. Furthermore, at 5 locations immediate processing after harvest was compared to processing after storage for approximately one week. Storage for one week lowered the amount of soil tare, interactions between genotype and storage were not significant. The different cleaning systems for loose soil varied up to 74 % in soil tare averaged over all genotypes. The genotypes varied in soil tare between 4 % and 6.3 %. In comparison to this the environments (year x site) showed variances from 2.9 % to 10.7 %. Interactions between the factors genotype, cleaning system and environment were significant. In environments with relatively high amounts of soil tare (soil type / soil moisture) the identification of low soil tare genotypes was not possible, because the morphological characteristics were superimposed by the effect of environment.
