Abstract

It has been demonstrated that differences in storability between varieties occur. However, storage experiments are quite time-consuming and costly. Therefore, parameters are needed which can characterize varieties for their storability already at harvest. The objective of the COBRI study was thus to identify at harvest parameters for a characterization of varieties with improved storability. 10 sugar beet varieties were grown at 4 sites in 2015 and 2016. After harvest, beets were stored for 8 weeks. The results demonstrate a clear effect of the growing site on the extent of damage, infestation of mould and rots and storage losses. Damage at harvest increased the differentiation between varieties. For all varieties, a higher marc content resulted in lower damage and lower infestation with mould and rots after storage. However, not in all cases the marc content allowed a judgement of the storability of varieties.
