Abstract

The use of glyphosate resistant sugar beet varieties would allow to reduce the use of herbicides in reduced tillage systems. Furthermore, with this technology also the opportunity of using winterhardy cover crops is given. To optimize weed suppression, reduction of soil erosion and decrease the leaching of nutrients a seed bed preparation was limited to a small band in the sugar beet row. Different glyphosate treatments were conducted between the years 2000 and 2003 to find optimal timing and dosages for weed and cover crop control. Influence of different systems on weed suppression, sugar beet emergence, weed control and yield & quality of the beets will be given.
