Yield formation of sugarbeet cultivated on ridges at sandy and loessial sites in Northern Germany

Abstract

Field trials were conducted in 2005-2007 at sandy and loessial sites of the Uelzen Region (Lower Saxony, Northern Germany) to elucidate the influence of ridge cultivation on soil physical characteristics and growth of sugarbeet compared to flat cultivation. Between sowing and 4-6-leaf-stage, daily mean soil temperature at the ridge was increased up to 1.4°C while the water content was decreased by about 5 vol.-%. Thereupon, field emergence of sugarbeet was up to 3 days faster and yield at 4-6-leaf-stage up to 45 % increased, when sowing was conducted by the end of March/beginning of April at a soil temperature substantially <10 °C. Until autumn relative yield increase due to ridge cultivation diminished to 7-8 %. Sowing in the beginning of May with considerably higher temperature did not enhance sugarbeet growth in ridge cultivation treatments. A relevant effect of high soil moisture at sowing on soil structure and plant growth was not detected. Yield response on ridge cultivation did not differ between sandy and loessial soils. For a comprehensive evaluation of ridge cultivation of sugarbeet the higher inputs of energy and machinery for ridge forming have to be taken into account.
