Teaching

In addition to research, academic teaching plays an important role at the Institute of Sugar Beet Research (IfZ). Since 2002, the IfZ has had the status of an affiliated institute of the Georg-August University of Göttingen and participates in the teaching of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in the Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral programmes. Courses are offered in crop science and crop protection and PhD students are supervised.

Topics for master's and bachelor's theses

We regularly offer topics for bachelor's and master's theses as part of our research projects. The spectrum is broad. Some topics can be assigned as both a bachelor's and a master's thesis. If you are interested, please contact the supervisor by e-mail. In addition to the theses announced here, it is also possible to jointly develop individual topics for a thesis.

Anwendung reverser genetischer Systeme zur Untersuchung der Rz1 Resistenzüberwindung bei Rhizomania (M.Sc.)

Die Rhizomania-Krankheit an der Zuckerrübe, verursacht durch das Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), ist die bedeutendste Viruserkrankung im Rübenanbau und kann nur durch pflanzliche Resistenzeigenschaften kontrolliert werden. Auf Grund der langjährigen Nutzung resistenter Zuckerrübensorten hat sich die Viruspopulation angepasst, so dass in einigen Anbauregionen bereits resistenzüberwindende Virusvarianten auftreten. Zwar konnte man bereits mehrere Mutationen im Virusgenom identifizieren, jedoch ist bisher nicht bekannt welche Mutation für die Resistenzübewindung verantwortlich ist. Daher soll im Rahmen einer Masterarbeit, der Einfluss verschiedener Mutationen auf die Resistenzüberwindung mit Hilfe eines reversen genetischen Systems untersucht werden. Es werden Methodenkenntnisse in der PCR-Mutagenese und Klonierung von RNA-Viren vermittelt sowie experimentelle Fertigkeiten im Gewächshaus.

Development of a reverse genetic system for the Beet necrotic yellow vein virus P-type (M.Sc.)

Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) is a member of the genus Benyvirus in the family Benyviridae. BNYVV causes Rhizomania disease in sugar beet, which is characterized by the abnormal proliferation of lateral roots leading to a significant decrease in sugar content and massive yield losses. BNYVV can be divided into the virus types, namely A-, B-, J-and P-type. The virus types differ in their genome sequence and number of RNA components. Interestingly, the P-type is the only virus type carrying an additional RNA component (RNA5). The RNA5 encodes a pathogenicity factor (P26) which is assumed to be responsible for enhanced symptom expression in sugar beet. Furthermore, an involvement in systemic movement is suspected. Recently, an infectious full length cDNA clone of a BNYVV P-type has been developed at the Institute of Sugar Beet Research. This cDNA clone can be used in a reverse genetic system to study the pathogenicity of the BNYVV P-type in sugar beet. It is the aim of the master thesis to implement an infection system in sugar beet and to study the effect of the different RNA components on the virus pathogenicity. The student will learn modern molecular techniques including PCR mutagenesis, cloning and agroinfection of sugar beet.

Investigations on Rz1 resistance breaking in sugar beet by Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (M.Sc.)

Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) is a member of the genus Benyvirus in the family Benyviridae. BNYVV causes Rhizomania disease in sugar beet, which is characterized by the abnormal proliferation of lateral roots leading to a significant decrease in sugar content and massive yield losses. Therefore, all sugar beet cultivars carry the Rz1 resistance gene preventing infection with BNYVV. However, there are several reports describing the occurrence of Rz1 resistance breaking strains. The high selection pressure has led to several mutations in the pathogenicity factor P25 at amino acid positions 67-70 (AS67-70). Furthermore, an additional RNA component from the P-type (RNA5) has been associated with Rz1 resistance breaking. Experimental studies confirming the resistance breaking effect of the mutations and reassortments are missing. Therefore, a reverse genetic system for sugar beet using a cDNA clone of BNYVV A-type and P-type has been developed at the Institute of Sugar Beet Research. This infection system will be used to study Rz1 resistance breaking by BNYVV in sugar beet. The influence of mutations in the pathogenicity factor P25 will be investigated by PCR mutagenesis. Furthermore, reassortment experiments should be conducted to confirm an effect of RNA5 on resistance breaking. The student will learn modern molecular techniques including PCR mutagenesis, cloning and agroinfection of sugar beet.
